Patronal Feast This Weekend and Other News

Everyone is invited to join us this weekend for services for our Patronal Feast.  This is a very important event in the life of the mission, and we are very excited to be celebrating St. John’s feast day on the last Sunday before the beginning of Great Lent.

Services will follow the normal schedule for the weekends:

  • Saturday (3/12) – Vespers @ 5:00 PM
  • Sunday (3/13) – Matins @ 9:30 AM; Typica @ 10:30 AM.

Festal lunch will follow services on Sunday.

In other news, our iconostasis icons are arriving soon from Bulgaria. They should be here for the Sunday of Orthodoxy next weekend (3/20). We will also be beginning inquirer’s classes on 3/20, after Sunday services and lunch. If you are interested in learning about the Orthodox faith, please plan to attend. We are also on track to have our first Divine Liturgy one of the Sundays of Great Lent.

On that note, we still need a number of things for the chapel so that a priest can come in and serve. The needs list can he found here. If you would like to be a benefactor to our chapel, please contact us to make a donation.

Thanks again to all those who are supporting this mission project with their time, effort, money, and most especially prayers. We greatly appreciate it, because without your support, this mission would not be possible!

Thank You

For all those who have contacted us concerning the tornado in our neighborhood last night, thanks be to God, we suffered no damage. However, many of our neighbors had damage to their homes or had homes destroyed. Please, keep the people in the Greenwood/McCalla area in your prayers.  Thank you again for all your concern.

Announcement

The monastery visit scheduled for this weekend (27th-28th) has been postponed.

Services at the chapel will be held at their regular times as listed on the schedule and calendar.

Great Lent Approaches

And with it, many exciting developments for St John Cassian Chapel. Our chapel’s patronal feast falls on the Sunday of Forgiveness (13 March), and we will be having a festal celebration following Sunday services on that day. Additionally, we will begin having inquirer’s classes on Sundays following Typica for those who are curious about Orthodoxy and desire to learn  more about our ancient church.  All are welcome to come and see.

Our monastery visit this month will be the weekend of February 27th and 28th. Any who plan to attend should let Reader Justinian know no later than the evening of 23rd, so appropriate arrangements can be made at the monastery. Also, please remember that as we are a dependency of the monastery, our visits over are for us to help contribute to the life and upkeep of the monastery.

God bless you as Great Lent comes ever nearer.

News on the Chapel Construction Project

We had a very productive week and Saturday work day this past weekend, and the new chapel space is coming along very nicely.  Work on the iconostasis is complete, and we are now awaiting the arrival of our icons.

There is still work to do, and we need to acquire many of the furnishings for the chapel; we are forever grateful to those gracious benefactors who have already donated icons, a chalice set, and money toward the construction of the iconostasis. But, we are moving ever closer to having a fully functional space appropriate for Orthodox worship. Our goal of having the chapel completed by March seems right on target.

Updates on the Chapel

We have moved into our permanent space and are beginning the refurbishment of the space for Orthodox worship. We have embarked on an ambitious project to get the chapel ready for our first liturgy in mid March. There will be work days announced on the calendar for Saturdays (and probably some Sundays after services) for us to be able to accomplish this goal in such a short span of time.

We greatly appreciate all the hard work and the gifts already given to make St John Cassian possible. However, as we continue to grow, so do our needs. If you would like to be a benefactor of the chapel, here is a list of our present needs:

  • Seven-branch candelabra
  • Gospel book and cover
  • Lampadas (and hooks)
  • Priest’s blessing cross
  • Altar table standing cross
  • Altar tabernacle
  • Processional fans
  • Corpus icon for the Cross

If you would like to donate any of these items on your own behalf or in memory of a loved one, please contact us at stjohncassian@gmail.com

Please, continue to keep us in your prayers as we move forward through this exciting new phase!

News for St John Cassian Chapel

It has been an exciting year for St John Cassian Chapel. This week, we will move on to the next phase in establishing a new mission as we transition from our weekly rental space to our new, semi-permanent location. The new location will provide us with space to have a more traditional worship environment, along with the luxury of not having to set up and take down everything for every service. It will also afford us the opportunity to have more services, more often–and we encourage you to visit us!

We will post pictures of our chapel progress as it is made. We are very thankful for your continued prayers and support.

This month’s monastery weekend will be December 19th & 20th. We will be there for St Nicholas’ feast day.
